Agarwood Formation
Agarwood forms when a tree sustains an injury, allowing fungi to infect the wound. In response, the tree releases defense substances, including phytoncides, to combat the invasion. This interaction produces "Agarwood resin," the precursor to Agarwood. Over time, this resin matures into the precious material we know as Agarwood.
This lengthy and complex process, shaped by unpredictable weather conditions, diverse geography, and unique resin-producing environments, results in distinct characteristics in each Agarwood specimen. The art of crafting Agarwood incense is a true homage to the profound influence of time and the mysteries of natural transformation.
Its Classifications
Due to the ever-changing and complex production environment of agarwood, various criteria and methods are used to classify it, based on factors such as place of origin, production method, harvest, and shape.
The most common classification method is based on its submersion state. While all types are collectively referred to as "agarwood," not all agarwood can sink in water. Agarwood that can fully submerge indicates a high oil content, exceeding a quarter of the total weight of the piece.
Those that sink completely to the bottom of the water are called "Shenshuixiang," while those that float on the water's surface are called "Huangshuxiang." The heavier it is, the rarer the agarwood becomes.
